Riverdale High School Takes Girls’ State Softball Championship
The new state champs in girls’ softball is…Riverdale High School. Riverdale beat Beech for the second game in a row, 9-1, and claimed the TSSSAA Class AAA Girls State Softball Tournament. Samantha Hoadwonich pitched the win for the Lady Warriors, keeping Beech pretty much in check the entire game. Beech’s lone score was a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. She scattered four hits, struck out four and walked none. The championship was Riverdale’s first in girls’ softball. The Lady Warriors finished 47-7.

Two Rutherford County students headed to ‘Junior Olympics’
Two Rutherford County students are headed to nationals for the three-position sporter air rifle competition, according to La Vergne High School Senior Army Instructor Cecil Calloway, LTC, USA (Ret). La Vergne High student Alexandra Wagner and Smyrna High student Chris Rowland both were invited to compete.
The competition is facilitated by coaches from the USA Shooting Team and is often referred to as the “Junior Olympics,” Calloway said. This year’s competition will be held in Anniston, Ala., on July 12-15. The two students both received individual invitations to compete even though their respective teams did not qualify for the contest.
