Forensic Institute for Research and Education-Camps and Workshops
MTSU established the Forensic Institute for Research and Education (FIRE) in summer 2006. It provides workshops and seminars for students and educators (middle school-high school) on learning math and science through forensics. The institute, under the direction of nationally known forensic anthropologist Dr. Hugh Berryman, brings together faculty and students in several scientific specialties to provide exceptional educational and training opportunities for law enforcement, medical examiners, coroners, attorneys, social workers, and other groups in forensic science and Homeland Security. FIRE also fosters research collaboration and grant development among faculty.
HighSchoolInterns.com is a dynamic and innovative federally approved IRS 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization based in Nashville, Tennessee, the Athens of the South. HSI has been founded to identify summer internships for high school students prior to college. As a result, students will be on the fast track to success with a greater understanding of how to communicate with professionals in a field of their choice, cultural and business dynamics within a professional organization, professional job environments, the benefits of establishing long-term professional relationships and how to incorporate their professional experience in college application essays. Students
will be able to enter college with greater self-confidence and have the ability to supplement academic work with a real world perspective in their prospective field.
UTSI-Center for Laser Applications Summer Camps
The Center for Laser Applications (CLA) at The University of Tennessee Space Institute was established in 1984 as a state funded Center of Excellence to provide outstanding capabilities in research, education and technology transfer in the increasingly important area of laser applications. CLA began as an active multi-disciplined and collaborative research group at UTSI with expertise and significant industrial and university-based experience in phenomena related to the interactions of lasers with gases, liquids and solids. The diverse background of the faculty and staff and the strong mission-related research programs of CLA provide a blend of applied and basic research that is unusual for universities.
The home of a local Civil War hero, the Sam Davis Home hosts school tours, events and special education programs.

enjoy exciting activities while simultaneously learning about local

Tennessee Museum of Aviation-Scholarships
The museum’s scholarship committee will
award an annual scholarship to a deserving student pursuing a degree
program specific to aviation. Application should be made to the Tennessee
Museum of Aviation, Attn: Aviation Scholarships Committee. No formal
form or format is necessary.

GRITS-Girls Raised in Tennessee Sciences
The GRITS initiative is directed by Dr. Judy Iriarte-Gross, Associate Professor of Chemistry at MTSU. GRITS seeks to provide means for young women to be involved in the maths and sciences, and provides information on careers in those fields. Each year, MTSU hosts the “Expanding Your Horizons” conference for middle school girls.

Provided by the Girl Scout Council of Cumberland Valley, this daylong program offered in area high schools exposes teen women to various careers and the idea of owning their own
businesses. Successful businesswomen serve as mentors and role models during this highly interactive program. An Income of Her Own introduces teens to the basics of developing a business plan, creative problem
solving, economic self-sufficiency, business concepts and vocabulary.
Provided by the Girl Scout Council of Cumberland Valley, this successful financial budgeting program is run
in middle schools and through other Girl Scout programs like Young Women’s Leadership Summit and Camp CEO. CentsAbility develops skills and increases knowledge of basic money management issues. As girls explore the relationship between the lifestyle and occupational choices they imagine for themselves as adults, they learn the important connection between income and expenses. Girls learn how to use budgeting as a simple and logical money management tool that will help them have a financially stable future.
Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest and fastest growing non-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise. In addition to its in-school classroom programs, Junior Achievement offers Exchange City, a program which helps young people discover, investigate and become productive citizens in a life-size replica of a real city. The students operate the stores, bank, post office, radio station, snack shop, newspaper office and city hall—all outfitted with modern office equipment and business supplies. During the Exchange City experience, students learn first-hand what it takes to create a business, run a newspaper, supervise employees and hold elected office, as well as personally earn and manage money.
